EdGamer 145: NIU’s STEM Read Program With Kristin Brynteson

Kristin Brynteson is the Assistant Director of the P-20 Center at Northern Illinois University. The Center for P-20 Engagement collaborates with internal and external partners to provide leadership and promote innovation by fostering interdisciplinary learning communities and initiatives which increase educational success. One of their projects is STEM Read, Coordinated by Gillian King-Cargile. Gillian King-Cargile has a bachelor’s degree in film production and an MFA in creative writing. She is a writer, a book lover, and a professional science appreciator. At NIU she directs the Creative Writing Day Camp for middle school students and co-directs STEM Outreaches Sci-Fi-based summer camps. In addition, she created and coordinates the STEM Read program. STEM Read features science fiction books with a basis in hard science, technology, engineering, or math. Students read the book on their own or with their library groups and then meet with experts in related fields at NIU to discuss the science behind the fiction.
